Golf for me is about as close as I get to escaping from the stresses and rigors of my life as I can get on a semi-weekly basis. After a game, too many practices, or the simple compounding of life itself, there is few things as satisfying for me as getting out and playing 18 holes in the morning and another 18 holes at twilight. With friends, or by myself it doesn’t seem to matter to me, I just really love to challenge myself to focus for that long, and attempt to recreate the same swing path and rhythm over and over again.

The game was initially introduced to my by my uncle as a child, but I couldn’t get into it as it lacked action to me. Now that I think about it, Baseball and Volleyball had become to slow for me at that time, so golf really had no shot of entering the game works. It wasn’t until I had played football for a year or so that the game was introduced to me by teammates Kelly Malveaux, and Darnell Kennedy while playing in Calgary. I was hooked after the first bucket of balls. I can think of few things that match the feeling of striking a golf ball perfectly. Dunking a basketball in a game for the first time, hitting a baseball 300 yds, and a game changing play in football all are definitely on par. The difference being, the chances of being able to do that 72 times in a 4 hour time span with those other sports are slim.

It wasn’t until 2009 that I was able to get out and actually get lessons, courtesy of the Edmonton Journal and the Windermere golf and country club, here in Edmonton. Without them, I’m fairly certain that I would have gone about trying to work my handicap down on my own, not really having any good idea about how to legitimately fix the problems that I was having with my swing.

Thank goodness for good teachers! I was assigned to Cam Martens for my journey last season and after shaving 10 strokes off of my game, he’s still my teacher. Lets see if I can keep those strokes off this year and get closer to that infamous scratch handicap that I’m seeking desperately.
